Industrial Soil Moisture & Temperature Sensor MODBUS-RTU RS485, 0-2V Analog Voltage (S-Soil MT-02A)

PRODUCT DETAILS

Note

Version 1 of this soil sensor supports the RS485 protocol, which is now retired, and replaced by this current one: Version 2, supporting RS485 protocol and 0~2V analog voltage. If your purchase the product before April 2021, it’s version 1, and please refer to user manual V1.0; else, please refer to user manual V2.0.

This Industrial Soil Moisture & Temperature Sensor comes in two versions. The main difference is in the cable connector. Please choose the version that best suits your needs:

(1) S-Soil MT-02B: with a waterproof aviation connector. This version saves you time in deployment as you won’t have to use screws to connect the cable to the data logger. And it can be used with SenseCAP Sensor Hub 4G Data Logger instantly with ease.

(2) S-Soil MT-02A: with hook-up wires.

Soil moisture is the water stored in the soil. Too much moisture in the soil is not only bad for the plants but also wastes water and adds extra burdens to our planet earth. Soil temperature is the warmth of the soil. Plants grow best at their preferred temperature ranges. With access to soil moisture and temperature data, we can take actions to make sure the right amount of water is irrigated at the appropriate time, and the plants are in optimal environments which are good for their growth.

This Soil Moisture & Temperature Sensor MODBUS-RTU RS485 (S-Soil MT-02A) is designed with industry standards. It incorporates two sensors (soil moisture sensor and soil temperature sensor) into one, featuring high precision and high sensitivity. By measuring the dielectric constant of the soil, it can stably measure the soil VWC (volumetric water content) regardless of various soil types. The measurement conforms to current international standards for soil moisture measurement.

This soil sensor is IP68 rated, very robust and durable, suitable to be applied at long-term monitoring of soil moisture and temperature at scientific experiments, water-saving irrigation, greenhouses, outdoor farming, gardening, precision agriculture, and other professional environmental monitoring scenarios.

FAQ

Q:    What exactly is soil moisture measured?
A: Measured is soil volumetric water content, soil volumetric water content %= soil volumetric water content * bulk density
Q:    How is soil volume water content measured?
A: By measuring the dielectric constant, and then through a certain calculation formula to convert into soil volume water content.
Q:    Why does the measured volume water content of soil not reach 100% in water?
A:

First of all, the saturated water content of the soil is about 60%, and the measurement of higher water content is not of practical significance.

Second, we need to pay attention to the test environment and method when testing.

7*7*7cm square column range measured by the sensor probe. If water is used for the test, a container of at least 20*20*20cm is required, and the probe is placed in the middle (with water to immerse the probe).

The resulting value will be between 80% and 100%.

Q:    How to install a soil sensor probe?
A:

Dig a vertical hole, insert the sensor steel needle into the hole to be measured, and then compacted the pit to ensure that the steel needle is in close contact with the soil.
